Ophelia Touchdown
This was my first week back to my regular scheduled programming after the delirium that was fashion week, accompanied by the derealization after Carrie passed.
With the looming reminder by passerby voices of the tropical hurricane that is suppose to hit, it was hard to not plan for a lazy day. I’m getting flashbacks of getting wrecked by the last hurricane two years ago when I was swimming through Bushwick to try and get back to the Lower East Side. How the hell do they decide on a name for a storm anyways? Who gets to name them? And are they naming the storms after their ex’s? Ophelia sounds like a cool girl.
Anyways, this week left me feeling empty, cold and sad. But seeing my friends and family made yet another New York week go by in flash.

Blockchain Chicken Farm -> And Other Stories of Tech in China’s Countryside - Xiaowei Wang
I picked this book up after stumbling upon Yu & Me bookstore in Essex Market. Yu & Me was devastated by a residential fire on July 4th. Given that this was 11 weeks ago and the last I saw from the GoFundMe (that raised $366,184 of it’s originally $150,000 goal) was that they were going to be recovering for at least a year. I had totally been blind to the updates on this bookstore so seeing the store in Essex Market was reassuring.
The first few pages of Xiaowei’s book had me hooked immediately. I love her writing style and how validating her experiences with the political climate in China is to my own personal interactions with it. I really have few people in my life that I’m able to discuss politics with, let alone that of China. Now, all I know about Blockchain and all encompassing is from some youtube videos and asking one too many questions about it from a Web3 expert at a part. It’s really so interesting to me and I’m glad that I’m able to learn more about it through a book that focuses on China and written by an asian woman. Learning about something new while connecting with my roots is COOL and FUN!

Casino - Lower East Side/Chinatown
Let’s add Casino to a long list of places that I like to call “my spot” when I’ve only been there a handful of times but every time I walk by I pretend as if I frequent it as much as North Dumpling. I also feel like calling a place like Casino “my spot” is just as embarrassing as calling a guy who is clearly for the streets, “my man”. And lets make it very clear that the reason I don’t just pop into Casino isn’t because of the dreaded Resy reservation (they have a front room for walk-in and a bar) but because the dim lighting and full stomach that kept me in on a Saturday night and * cough cough * the price.
Let me take a jab at manifestation with my hopes to dine on the basement floor of Casino surrounded by my loved ones after I wear Bad Binch TongTong and Y Project Melissa mules to City Hall to get married. And to anyone who knows me, knows how strange it is for me to be talking about marriage, but influencers (Gia Kuan) have a strange way of influencing (pink bow shaped butter will penetrate the heart of any girl, I’m afraid).

Bomber Jacket - Redacted
Okay yes lets address the elephant in the room, this jacket is made by Gosha Rubchinskiy. As we are now in 2023 I think it’s safe to say that no one misses Gosha, right? If you have no idea what I’m talking about then here is the most recent video I can find about the situation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6lhy0OM-cI. But this bomber jacket has brought me a sense of safety that only my tattered childhood blanket can. I have owned bomber jackets in the past but none of them are quite as cool as this one. The interesting color, oversized shape and collared neckline make this jacket incredibly special to me. As a gal who likes to customize, the removable patches make me excited to find something that I can use to replace the ones that came with the jacket.
Also shout out to Colin, my neighbor and friend who made my Comme Des Garcon/Dover Street Market dreams come true with the Market Market volunteering opportunity and the only reason I have this jacket.

In the Mood for Love - Wong Kar-wai
Was anyone else not allowed to watch anything growing up so you would read the plot on Wikipedia, watch clips on Youtube and romanticize stills from Tumblr? In the Mood for Love was one of those movies for me. I love that everything in this movie happens in the same hallway, street and stairwell where the main characters are merely passing by each other or experiencing the same places but doing different things. Maggie Cheung’s 20+ dresses/qipao/cheongsam just added to the beautiful cinematography and the capturing of time throughout this movie. I’m sure I’ll be watching this again soon.

Shan Fu Slushies - Lower East Side/Chinatown
As the summer comes to an end, Shan Fu (A & N fruit store) slushies don’t. At the corner of Essex and the ending of Canal there is a corner store with chips, tall boys and a sweet slushie and smoothie combo. I’ve never gotten a smoothie from here because I am a loyal Hawa smoothie girl but nothing beats the now $8 extra large fresh fruit slush. Do not sleep on the passion fruit and the cantaloupe flavors. Rich and I did a peach and mango moment the other night before heading home.

Carrie Walsh <3
Carrie was everything that she set out to be. The memory that she left behind was more than a happy one. Carrie was warm, loving and caring. She exuded these things when she walked into a room and continued with how she spoke and treated you. They also reflect on her amazing children. I have the pleasure of knowing Stacie, who has the same traits as her mother. She is also incredibly hilarious and smart, things that I’m sure she got from Carrie as well. I hope that the moments shared between Carrie and her family bring comfort and solace during this difficult time. My deepest condolences for her family and the community that was touched by her.
